What oxygen level is used for fire prevention?

The oxygen concentration required for oxygen reduction fire prevention depends on the combustible materials present, the characteristics of the protected environment and the engineered fire protection design.

Normal ambient air contains approximately 20.9% oxygen. FirePASS® states that its oxygen-reduced fire prevention environments typically operate at around 15% oxygen, although the required setpoint must be determined for the specific application. Different materials have different ignition thresholds, so there is no single oxygen concentration that should be applied to every facility.

FirePASS® systems therefore use continuous oxygen monitoring and control to maintain the specified oxygen concentration for each protected environment.
